Re: What is your favorite local or folk music?

Pilou> Yes, nice song! I like it. Thank you for sending. This thread was mainly aimed to let us know the local music from your country (France?). But there is no problem to mention the music you like of course! :)

Taron> Thank you so much for your invitation! Unfortunately our daughter is too young (one year) to make a longer trip to Croatia nowadays but maybe in the future. If we have holidays in Croatia I will let you know for sure! In any case our doors are open for you too! :)

I always wonder that some czech sentence I can exactly translate word by word and the translation is correct. The phrase you mentioned "Don't paint the devil onto the wall!" is very good example of that (in czech "Nemaluj čerta na zeď). ""Don't look a gift horse in the mouth!" sounds really terrible (German version sounds better in rhymes) but we have similar phrase too - "Darovanému koni na zuby nekoukej" :) Instead mouth there is teeth :) But most of the translations are very different including words order.
Just for interest, I found the longest known words :)
czech: nejnezdevětadevadesáteronásobitelnějšího (but it is only example - not common at all)
english: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (maybe rather latin)
german: Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübertragungsverordnung
swedish: nordöstersjökustartilleriflygspaningssimulatoranlaggingsmaterialunderhallsuppföljningssystemdiskussionsinaggsförberedelse (is it correct? :D)

Re: What is your favorite local or folk music?

heh pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis ='s an artificial long word said to mean a lung disease caused by inhaling very fine ash and sand dust according to the wikipedia but the meaning is easily arrived at by breaking the word down as in pneumono, ultra, microscopic, silico, volcano, oniosis.

I am not multilingual but respect those that are for having put the time into the learning. If I were to try and learn a new one (for me that is) it would be either Spanish or Japanese. Still, the "Romantic" languages share words that I recognize. Wonderfully interesting thread Lemi and stimulating. :ob

And Pilou, I LOVE Dobros! Wow those are beautiful! I would add a few but American music seems to be too well known and diverse :D

Aaah, thank you for the contribution, Pilou! Great to hear the traditional Corsica song. Maybe Napolean sang this song with the natives on the island too :)
I think it is very difficult to sing this song and to retain the key and harmony.
