Things are going more and more crazy.
I have been to a Pixar talk about their short
„Piper“.
It was more about light & rendering.
For sand, they really used translucent little cubes.
Some dialog at Pixar was sonething like:
„Do you know that Piper already took more render capacity than complete Toy Story!?“
„Cool“
„No! That is not cool at all!“

:)

Boy, I'm so happy I don't have to deal with that sort of stuff anymore... it's like they just go for more complicated techniques and push the hardware to the limit, while the art is least challenged somehow. Yeah, you can push physics simulations to the meltdown and all that jazz, but really...is that what it's all about?
I much prefer clever and beautiful solutions, supporting a good story and atmosphere. Today I believe the only acceptable challenge is how to cram the most into real time computation and not how to exhaust millions of dollars of hardware and try to amaze with the longest rendering times, hahaha. :ud:
Didn't see piper, though.

...now I did. Very cute, of course! :)

There will be two sides for quite some more time. I am sure.
Realtime is rapidly growing, i.e. Unreal Engines possibilities are breathtaking.
But on the other side, those guys at pixar i.e. are really pushing things up to the limit and even above.
Things which are not possible in realtime.
But one thing is for sure! Those rendering times are not visible in a HD high compressed youtube video even though I searched a while to find a good resolution, compression.

Realtime will be the the future and for a bunch of situations it already could be right now. Complex particle calculations like above will take some more time.
But future could be bright as any idot on earth is looking for more power (unfortunately also power in term of electricity) to generate blockchain money.
What a sin!!
