Hello Dines, congratulations on your stuff!! :ob I really like the illustration of the fireworks and how you work on the environments, c:! I also really like your funny characters, it's as if they were made with clay, they are really 3D! :ob ...I wonder how two, or more, would look together in the same scene? :D Greetings!!

Re: dines sketch book

I like the choice of colors for the atmospheric perspective! Very interesting! :ob
The airplane is cute, hehehehehehe... can you imagine, the tip of an airplane is paper-thin sheets of metal. If that only touches something it virtually collapses into nothingness. I would say it looks like an abandoned toy, A laser-accident had cut off the tip of the left wing and totally cut off the right, or so, hehehe.

One easy and super cool trick with scenes like this one are elements in the very foreground that cut over the main interest in the scene, creating more "planes" for the depth.

Here, I've made something for you real quick in Vervette...

Re: dines sketch book

Thank you Taron!
I really like the depth in your Image and the smooth gradients.
So my learnings:
- sometimes it is more interesting to put something in front of the main object in the scene.
- the Sky is a much smoother gradient and the top is little darker (I thought I already know that).
- Depth is made with color and important
- And I still suck at painting airplanes :D ...

So I tried it again... and interestingly while resizing the image ... I recognized it doesn't look like a planish air / spacecraft it looks more like a submarin in a under water world :PP ... this was not meant to be but anyway... it was all about practising the scene.

Re: dines sketch book

WAH! Look at THAT! :hyper:
Much, much better and such a neat style! I love that style, Dines, fantastic job! :ob :ob :ob
It does look a wee bit aquatic, but then again, who cares, it's really nice! And it has a much nicer sense of space, too. Really great job! c:!

Oh, hahaha, I should've read your post first... :hihi: , yeah it looks a bit more like a submarine, but again, it doesn't matter much, because of the neat style. :bounce:

Re: dines sketch book

Thank you so much! ... will need more practise for sure but I do like it better as well.

Today's paint c:! is a paint from reference. I saw this image of an owl and was somehow amazed. So I gave it a spin. And I do know that feathers are hard but damn ... this hard!

Re: dines sketch book

Oh, jeeez, that's a really complicated subject, Dines! You've done a decent job, though.
Well, look at the deep shadows that fall into the eyes in the reference. That's actually a fantastic thing to see and realize about eyes. I know how reluctant I used to be with such stark contrasts and still am, but such a reference helps to recognize just how bold you could become, if you allow yourself to.

Hmmm, I hope you don't mind, but here's a little step by step on how I'd go about this one...
Look for the brightest color on the borders of the iris, because it's easiest to have those colors there already and then just blend brighter and darker colors into those...

Do the harsh shadows as deep as they need to be... fairly easy.

Do the bright parts where the light goes...

Do the pupils and bevels around them. This also shows where you need to brighter or darker. Bit of smudging...

Add the highlights, not just on the eye itself, but also around it while you're at it...

Now just paint the feathers and try to understand their streaming directions. Try to get a feel for what they look like. Where are highlights, where are soft areas and so on...

This is all in Vervette, of course... super fun to do those! :hyper:

Re: dines sketch book

Today was a very busy day - so unfortunately no time to paint. ;(

But as I saw this! I had to reply. Whow amazing you rock! That looks so real. And thank you very much for the breakdown. That is gold!
I might redo it again and try to adapt some of the things you mentioned.
You do not know how grateful I feel. It is a realy great learning journey and soooo much fun bouncing the paintings back and forth. THANK YOU. :bounce:

It is also an experience where I start to see different things. I start to see more and more little shadows, think about forms and shapes as well as materials... it feels somehow almost like consciousness expansion in some sort. More focus on details and discovery of things that one might overlook. But still disconnected from my hands - it feels hard to express that with a pen.

But anyway I am having so much fun and enjoy the ride. Excided to be back at the tablet soon.

Re: dines sketch book

Today's painting c:! - I gave the owl another whirl.

Following things I changed:

- started with the eyes first.
- refined my technique according to your mini tutorial
- experiemented more with brushes to find other ways to paint the feathers
- paid more attention to the flow of the feathers and the high and soft lights.

Learnig:
- feathers a still hard
- Thank you for your breakdown and pointing me into the right direction

the eyes:

Still lot's to improve but for me it's my best piece of work so far (at least for me) c:!
