Maximum Resolution Graphics Card Poll

Can we please get some specific details about how well peoples video cards are performing with Verve......
Specifically what MAXIMUM RESOLUTION you able to achieve and still have Verve work smoothly with full fluids and be able to save and re-open files.
I am personally interested in finding a system which can handle very large canvas sizes suitable for large format printing
and Im finding that its not as simple as having more Vram. Im talking 5000 to 10000 pixels if thats possible.
So if you have a minute please push Verve to the limit and let me when when you hit the wall.

Please post details about your system, video card, vram
and the maximum resolution you are able to work with full fluids comfortably....and able to save and RE-OPEN your files.
(I have found that I can save bigger files but then I cant re open them without and error message or weird things like black backgrounds)

Info might be of interest to Taron too as he contemplates ways to optimize.

So to kick things off...

Im working on
2012 Macbook Pro with bootcamp
8 GB of ram
i7 processor
Nvidia 650m with 1 GB of Vram
Maximum Res for Verve is about 2500x1500 pixels
after that I get an Exception Access Violation error from Windows

Thanks for your input

I could've sworn I made that thread sticky, haha! ;)
I wonder, if I should just enter your info into the existing thread and delete this one, if you don't mind!

I'll work on ways to determine max resolution automatically for each system! But this has to wait a moment. :|

Currently I deal with buffers liberally, while I could go a lot tighter, which will enable higher resolutions and more layers for high resolutions. It will also speed things up in all likelihood, especially when using multiple layers.

Anyway, I wouldn't ask people to find out at what point Verve crashes on their machines, haha, but it's kind of nice to know, too. However, just add that info in the existing thread, that would be cool!

By the way, the rest of the system doesn't matter. CPU and it's memory are hardly taxed by Verve. 8-)

Ok thanks guys...
I did see this thread once way back but couldn't find it again.
Sorry but I was just a little frustrated in my card research.
Weird stuff….my older Nvidia 650m with 1 GB gram runs better than some newer faster cards Ive tested with more Vram…makes no sense to me.
So I was just curious about real world performance.
I keep hitting wall around 4000 pixels in most cards I test.
I would be happy with a single hi res layer.
So I meant to ask you Taron for more specifics about what Verve really needs and what the hardware limits might be.
Thanks…go ahead and delete or move this
:)

You couldn't find the first thread on this forum? :?
I've noticed that it's good to take a deep breath, when ever things get a bit too tense and impatience overcomes me. :o :)

Verve is only gradually making its way into higher resolutions. Initially I never expected it to go higher than 1280x720, haha, kinda got thrilled when I comfortably went up to 1920x1080. It's a free tool with its origins in pure experimentation! This is a little reminder to take a step back for a moment and start counting blessings, so to say.

The things I have discovered and developed already, however, have made it conceivable that Verve can break all records and even furnish higher resolutions to be a full-on production tool. It already is, in fact, an amazing production tool alone because of the ability to save out color and material as two layers at 16bits per channel color depth, which enables direct and brilliant use for certain texturing needs in 3d projects.

The reality is, I have neither the funding nor time to really determine hardware requirements or test it on various environments. I have to rely on your feedback to come to some info for performances on different systems. That's what that very first post here on this community forum is for! However, I started it long before custom resolutions came into the mix. Now, I could add the request to write down "encountered limits" or so... but I don't want to scare people off from writing down at least their hardware itself.

I would also like to see Verve handle higher resolutions. I don't need resolutions as high as Stavros, but 4000 x 3000 pixels would be great.

I don't know much about GPU computing, but I also work with other GPU software, such as Octane Render and Blender, and (if memory serves me) Octane Render software can go up to 8192 x 8192.

One thing that I have noticed is that opening a large file seems to work much better than resizing the canvas. Resizing the canvas many times will crash Verve or create a black screen, but opening a large file of the same size seems to work pretty well with little side effect.

Could make sense.
Anyway, if I went for tiling, any resolution would become possible. How workable is a different question! :P

deep breath…now swirl!

Just to clarify……ahem…..this was just meant as an inquiry….no demands or expectations.
Im just a Mac guy looking into buying a dedicated Windows system just to run Verve and I was just curious about what resolutions are possible.
The first thread on this forum is about graphics cards and there is little mention of resolutions so Im not sure what your referring to.
Why?…..
Because Verve is breathtakingly unique and original and I know of no other software which which offers this kind of visual interactive improvisation.
So I am profoundly grateful that it even exists let alone that it is currently free.
One of the most amazing aspects of Verve (aside from the obvious fluids) is that the entire canvas is alive and responsive and that brushes can be bigger than the canvas itself(this is ridiculous)
and that the transitions and colours are so smooth across gradients. (no stepping or nasty artifacts). I realize this magic comes at the cost of some super sexy graphics technology!
As someone interested in large scale abstract impressionistic work, this is unheard of and a game changer approach to painting and I never imagined possible before Verve.
I find it difficult to go back to a static canvas (Ive been ruined) now so if development stopped tomorrow I would say thank you for what you have given us and keep on Verving!
The truth is we can make all the suggestions we like but your vision seems much grander than most of us can yet imagine! Kudos!
No please excuse me while I go swirl some pixels!

Hmmm...I take any desire as a demand, because your wish is my command! ;)
Great, thanks, Stavros! One of these days, when all goes well and I can justify it, I'll get a mac and see to compiling a proper version for those, too. If enough mac users were eager enough, they could pitch together and send me a machine, too, haha, that might work! :P
But even that would have to wait until I have proper time for it again. I am looking forward to it, though!

Aha!
You jest but I am serious!
I would be the first that get that ball rolling with a donation!
Only hesitation is……………if we actually managed to get you a machine
there would be great pressure and expectation to deliver a Mac version.
Probably not something you want to deal with right now.
Stay focused
Be happy
