Lord Insectord gives suggestions

Hi, first of all, kudos and thanks for this awesome app, Taron!

After painting this self-portrait, Lord Insector came with some stuff he would appreciate to see implemented one day:

· [F]+LMB+Drag to change Fluidity

· Export/Save individual/visible layers as transparent PNGs

· GUI Widgets w/shortcuts to popup at cursor position, so for example:
[X] calls a widget for Fluids and Brush Options.
[C] calls the color wheel.
[Z] calls the layers stuff.
This way, specially on big wide monitors we can save a lot of constantly "traveling" to the right corner.

· Resizeable GUI (dials and buttons are too small for big resolutions)

And that's all for now, which is probably too much already...
Anyway, thanks again and please keep it up!

Re: Lord Insectord gives suggestions

I'm speechless.

:o

That is just so very beautiful! Ehem, i mean: You're a handsome dignitary, Sir, Lord, Sir! Fantastic!
Widgets, yeah, that's a great word, I'll use that for sure. Never know how to call these things... context menus? But yeah, that's part of the plan. I still need to work out an elegant solution for floating windows for sure. But there are a number of things under the hood I still have to clean up and work out.

[F]+[LMB] for fluids...perfect... I'll do that. I still have [Shift]+[F] to fill. I hope that's not going to lead to accidents. Expect that in the very next update!
Exporting layers with alpha is prepared and will happen soon! I just need to get the floating windows and such for a file IO interface. Otherwise that may get a bit tricky.

As for all the other hotkeys, I'll make them all customizable, screw it, I want people to lay stuff out the way they like it, but I do like your choices there a lot! The "layer stuff"..uhm..you mean the dials for the current layer only, right, not like the whole layer interface. But, yeah, very good idea!

Resizable gui.... ugh...eh...really? I'm running a 2560x1600, but on a fairly big monitor, and ...ah, who cares, you think they're too small, point taken, yet you do have those big eyes  !? Hmmmm.... damn facets! All noted and I'll see what I can do, for sure!

And I really beg you to post some stuff in the Gallery! This is just so wonderful! You can't know how happy you are making me already!
Thank you very, very much and ROCK ON! 8-)

Alright, you can already download the current version again and you have your [C] colorwheel at your mouse, your Highness! :D
(it's still a tiny bit shakey, but with some good will it already works! Not yet sure why, but occasionally it would want to go green. It's still a trendy thing, I guess?!)

Re: Lord Insectord gives suggestions

Awesome updates!

For the fluidity popup, after some minutes of use, I think it would be handier if it doesn't require to hold LMB, so you can paint a stroke, press F, move the mouse left or right to affect the current storke, pretty much like using the keyboard, but with the precision of your wrist.

About the gui size, is not about the eyes, is about the hand-stylus coordination, certain tablet+monitor sizes make difficult to have speed and precision for small stuff like the small dials or the "new layer" buttons.
Personally I even struggle with the outer dials of the color picker, but that's a minor issue, maybe I've a condition or something :D

Also, to delete a layer do we have to hide it first? if is not a bug, it would be better to have only one step, and I would also love to have a hotkey. And speaking of layer management hotkeys, I think they should be closer to the CTRL-Z area, but I that is something that can wait till custom hotkeys.

And of course, I will post stuff in the gallery! That's the least I can do!

Thank you!

Re: Lord Insectord gives suggestions

Oh no, you do not need to hide the layer to delete it. Just grab it an move it off the screen OR press [Shift]+[Delete]
However, you certainly need to select it first, hehehe....just so that that's clear. For hide/unhide you do not need to select the layer.

The Fluidity "Widget" was a spare of the moment thing, as I noticed that my code supports the assignment of any gadget to the current mouse position, if I wanted that. That was just too cool, hahaha. So I figured, why not hook the dial to the key, rather than blindly hoping to hit a desired value, you know.
But I like your idea, too. I could have a look at that, or make that an option. I want to hook up much more customization eventually anyway.

Where's your Gallery thread, Zafio? I can't wait to see more of what you do with Verve. You're awesome! :D

Re: Lord Insectord gives suggestions

Then something weird is going on with the grab-delete thing here. Sometimes I have to try up to 5 or more times to make it work... :?
Also I think the confirmation should be closer to the layers and simplified, something like this for example?:

Re: Lord Insectord gives suggestions

Interesting idea for sure. I have a plan for that side of the layer, though and I'd just worry that this would add a layer of complication that would change expectations everywhere, you know.
Don't forget, you can always hit [shift]+[delete] to delete a layer.
When you use dragging to delete, the mouse has to travel for 100 pixels to the right. In case of full screen, this would still allow it to work, but you may have to grab the layer close to the inside tip of it.
However, the whole layer interface is still not ready. I still need to add a scroll bar, if you have more layers than would fit in the opening, haha. Oh boy. But, yeah, the inside of the layer will most likely become an effects section. You could pull layers "out" to reveal effects such as color corrections, filters and so on.
But we shall see, in principle I don't mind the recycle bin concept.

Re: Lord Insectord gives suggestions

From the very corner of the layer panel, now it "only" fails half of the time... well, never mind, can live using shift+delete.

Forgot to mention another thing that could be handy would be a couple of hotkeys for Buildup (personally I change it a lot):
B = widget popup
Shift+B = Toggle between whatever value is currently set, and 0, so it is faster to just "lock transparency" on a layer.

Re: Lord Insectord gives suggestions

Me, TOO! Yeah, my goodness, great idea! Expect it in the next update! :D
I'm also still thinking about your "direct dial" suggestion rather than having to go onto the widget itself. I'll try some stuff, see if it feels right. As long as I can get some consistency (ideally consistently good, of course, haha), I think it's alright.

Oh...eh...hmm, I think I could do another consistent thing where you can toggle between current and last value instead of a fixed 0. That way it might become a thing that could go for all widgets, too. We shall see! :ugeek:
UUUUuuuhhh, how about a right mousebutton second value. You'd dial either with your left or with your right. A single hit on the widget would also get the value set then. That way we wouldn't take away a whole subset of hotkeys, you know. Just an idea. Gotta see how that feels.
